About Early Girl
Early Girl Eatery opened its doors in mid October of 2001. Centrally located in downtown Asheville on historic Wall Street, the critically-acclaimed Eatery offers delicious southern food in a casual, charming atmosphere.
The Early Girl serves dinner Tuesday thru Saturday night and offers breakfast and lunch 7 days a week. Our dinner menu emphasizes comfort and relaxation with the same attention to freshness and innovative specials that we apply to our breakfast, lunch and brunch menus. As the restaurant continues to grow so does our selection of baked-from-scratch-goods. Delicious quick breads and desserts are available every day and whole pies and cakes can be ordered with at least 24 hours notice.
The menu relies heavily on the high quality local produce grown in the area by family farms and community-supported agriculture (CSAs). Our cheeses and some of our meats are also produced and raised locally. The menu changes periodically with the seasons, while the specials change daily. This enables us to better utilize the local ingredients available. We believe local food tastes better and sustains a healthy community. Made from scratch is the motto at the Early Girl, and our recipes reflect our background in southern cooking as well as our vast experience with vegetarian fare.
About the owners
John and Julie Stehling met in Charleston, South Carolina where they both worked for John's brother at the Hominy Grill. From Charleston they traveled extensively both across the country and throughout Asia. Thoughts of settling down always brought them back to Asheville and back to the dream of owning their own restaurant.
In creating the restaurant, John and Julie drew from their life experiences and abilities. They wanted a friendly and energetic gathering spot for residents and their families. Drawing on John's southern upbringing in a family that believed in a large garden and meals made from scratch and on Julie's long-held beliefs in healthy eating, they used their shared vision to build the Early Girl Eatery. With the additional help of family and great staff, Early Girl is exceeding their expectations and becoming an integral part of the downtown Asheville community.
